The Gouch is back on the beat Reviewing his Recommended CD selections

Back in February Bob and I were the guests on the excellent Soul Discovery show on 209 radio out of Cambridgeshire, our host of course was Mick O'Donnell. As soon as Bob realised I was at home recuperating he immediately roped me in to review some of the newer music that might be heading to this years Yarmouth bashment. So here goes;

First up then is Andre Lee and his 2008 excellent long player "Straight From the Heart". I was immediately struck by the mid tempo dancer "Ill do whatever", a very simple musical backdrop which allows for some top vocals, for a southern influenced tune this really is a tune.

That top husband and wife duo Kindred (the family soul) came up trumps again with a quite stunning album titled "The Arrival", from the first play I latched onto the dancer "Love we share", this tune has the lot, a huge production and some outstanding vocals, this hasn't reached the dizzy heights of acceptance it should have, maybe Yarmouth can nudge it in the right direction.

The new Charlie Wilson album is a very hit and miss affair, actually it more miss than hit but the saving grace is the wonderful version of "There goes my baby", set at the perfect tempo this really does command attention and respect, its one hell of a soul tune. Unless you're dead you couldn't fail to have been impressed by the horn driven dancer by Southside Johnny & The Asbury Dukes, yes "She's still in love" from the 2002 "Going to Jukesville" album has been ripping up dance floors up and down the country for the past 6/8 months or so, Yarmouth too will be rocking to this monster. Of the newer music then I suspect that the fabulous Freddie Lee and his anthemic "Oh how I love you" will cause some serious dance floor activity, rolling along in its mid tempo groove and the mans vocals riding the groove effortlessly, when the hook gets into your head, you wont be able to help your selves. The album is titled "Beyond Comprehension", soul music 2009 style.

The Reggie Boone album has been out some while now but "Love one another" is heading our way at full steam, a stunning modern soul dancer that will have you on the floor from the first play, from the 2008, the album is titled "The Incomparible", another album that's an essential purpose so many top moments. And finally an absolute killer in the shape the Funk Filharmonik "If we make love first/we'll make love last" from there album "Everybody get down" banks of horns, all very Tower of Power, a future classic to be sure.
